  1. Dear Matt, greetings from Paris !

Quite a nice finding. It is an advertisement bookmark that french railways companies used to give to their customers before the nationalization of 1936.

This one is from a company created in 1857 and called: “Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée”, and whose logo is PLM at the bottom.

This company served Paris to Lyon and then the south of France, hence the arrow ad message: “vers le soleil” meaning “to the sun” with the arrow point to the Cote d’Azur circle and the beach scene. The company’s trains started at Gare de Lyon and the HQ was at 88 rue St-Lazare. A photo of the gate is this site:

I know well the place, I pass through here bearly every day going to and from work. It is around the Gare St-Lazare and the Printemps department store.

I have a nice one found in a book on another company of the east of France. I may send you a scan if you want (it is very nice with a young in typical alsacian headgear).

These bookmarks and their illustrations where typical of the 1920’s-1930’s.

    Nice finding !

    All the best.
